  4. Roman port and pleasure resort; it was
  5. completely buried beneath volcanic ash when
  6. Vesuvius erupted AD 79. Over 2,000 people
  7. were killed. Pompeii was rediscovered 1748
  8. and the systematic excavation begun 1763
  9. still continues.
